Debate Class 1/3

class series 1 of 3

Intro to debate series for leftists

This 3 part series consisting of a lecture, workshop, and mock debate will serve as an introduction to how to construct and deconstruct oral arguments in a formal debate setting. We will cover topics such as pathos, ethos, and logos, fallacies, research, how to anticipate arguments and view topics from many perspectives, rhetorical strategy, how to incorporate leftist theory, types of debates, and essential public speaking skills.

  1. Class#1 - The basics- Lecture format (1.5 hours)

    1. In this hour lecture we will cover an introduction to several types of debate structure, foundations of structuring an argument (pathos, logos, ethos), common fallacies to avoid,  incorporating leftist theory and praxis into an argument, and essential public speaking skills

    2. 30 minutes will be left at the end for questions and participants will be sent home with debate questions to consider as they get ready for the second part of the series. Debate questions will be based on common points of contention amongst leftists. Participants will be split into two debate teams.

  1. Class #2 - Building an argument- debate prep Workshop format (2 hours)

    1. This workshop will begin with a 30 minute interactive presentation about researching in preparation for debate, the importance of drawing from a variety of disciplines, sources, and perspectives, anticipating your debate opponent’s arguments, Rhetorical strategy, and listening to respond.

    2. The workshop will continue with an hour long work session. Participants will work in groups to prepare for their side of the debate

    3. 30 minutes will be reserved at the end for questions and open discussion about how their research went and any challenges faced in preparing in a group

  1. Class #3 - Mock debate (2 hours)

    1. Debate structure still tbd, likely 3 questions w/ 13 minutes of speaking time per team per question, and 5 minute huddles between questions, approx 1.5 hours total time

    2. Judges will score and take notes for a 30 minute discussion post debate where participants will receive feedback

  1. Potential for future events

    1. May be the beginnings of a league to allow for a healthier outlet than “leftist infighting”. Could be formally structured, face to face, and done with the intention of coming to a better understanding of the issues we face as a collective and how we can mobilize together. More than just a space to debate, it could serve as a place to problem-solve, and increase everyone’s capacity to persuade people in our communities to learn more about leftist ideas and groups like ours.
